Hi, My name is Alex Mortimer
I feel kind of awkward to writing all this down, blogging is not really one of my strong suits. But luckily Nick posted that rubric that hopefully i can abide by. You already know my name but to tell you my family background is gonna take a litlle while longer.
I'm Jamaican. My father is British and my mother is from Trinidad and Tobago; we moved to the states in 2001. So when asked in preparation for this trip whether I had my passport I responded by saying I already had four. My family lives in Alpharetta, Ga, but I now live in Athens,Ga where i ama a second-year at UGA (University of Georgia). Go DawGSSSSS!!!!!!! Right now i am majoring in economics and hopefully minoring in Film Studies, film is my real passion though. I do have a job as a leasing consultant at the apartment complex I live in so when we actually get to meet one another and you ask me to, I could probably recite the entire leasing contract. The really bad part is I end up doing that to my friends; we'll be going to dinner and I'll start talking about maintinence requests and sublease forms..... not fun!
Everyweek me and a group of guys wreak havoc on the airwaves of WUOG 90.5 with our talk-show The Film Thing. This show, which takes place every wednesday night, is one my favorite things to do all week and it doesnt hurt that Modern Family comes on right after I get home. I used to play intramural quidditch for slytherin but that fell through cuz i got tired of being the seeker each week; I kept the t-shirt though.
This will not have been my first mission trip. I have been to Russia twice and been on various trips around the USA, but I have not gone on a mission trip in a couple years. I committed to this trip because I want to get of town so badly, I feel cramped, stifled, almost like I can't breathe. Prayer has been my respite in hard times. This best part about this God is you never have to make appointments to see him! Am I RIGHT?!?! Anyway, with the knowledge of what we can do as the body of Christ I have no fear about the two months we all will spend together. In my own life I dont know whats going on half the time, but I do know this.
We will fall in love with the master of creation all over again! There will be times of great joy and of pain, of happiness and sorrow, so my prayer starting today is that we become a team that is united not only in our common faith but rather the inherent knowledge that we are family commited to stand by each other through thick and thin. We are all different but we are also the same; we all decided to go to Africa for the summer and that is ridiculously cool to me.
I sit here at my computer writing to people I've never met, but I have met you. On the shores of eternity we've worshiped the one true God....... I just cant wait to do it in Africa.
Thanks,
Alex
